BAYER Baytubes for the VELOZZI-NANOLEDGE alternative energy vehicle project

10/23/2009

Velozzi announces collaboration with Nanoledge to provide innovative resin solutions using Bayer MaterialScience’s Baytubes

Collaboration leverages Baytubes multi-walled carbon nanotubes in response to customer demand for improved composites

Pittsburgh, October 22nd, 2009 — Bayer MaterialScience LLC, one of the world’s leading suppliers of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, will collaborate with Nanoledge Inc., a leading innovative epoxy resin formulator, to provide a full range of high-performance epoxy-based materials to the composite market in North America.
Alternative energy vehicle (AEV) maker Velozzi and Bayer MaterialScience are collaborating to develop lightweight hybrid electric vehicles to be built with components using Baytubes® multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

“We at Velozzi are proud to be at the forefront of producing body and interior components using epoxy, carbon fiber and nanotubes. Baytubes can increase the mechanical properties of our components up to 40 percent. We are excited to work with Nanoledge as a formulator of epoxy  resin systems with carbon nanotubes,” said Velozzi head Roberto Jerez.

Nanoledge will use its Nano In™ technology to integrate Bayer Material Science’s Baytubes multi-walled carbon nanotubes, into epoxy resin to improve the mechanical performance of composites. For example, Baytubes will be used to reduce crack growth and improve fatigue, impact and compression resistance, without compromising other properties.

Baytubes multi-walled carbon nanotubes can be added to a wide range of materials including polymer matrices or metal systems as a modifier or filler to improve their mechanical strength and/or antistatic properties, and are increasingly used in epoxy, thermoplastic and coating systems.

The collaboration, combining Bayer MaterialScience’s expertise in carbon nanotube synthesis and manufacturing with Nanoledge’s expertise in epoxy resin and composite processing, will support a full range of product innovations including ready-to-use formulations, prepregs and resin films.

“Collaborating with Bayer MaterialScience enables us to respond to strong customer demand for higher-performing, epoxy-based composites with improved damage tolerance,” said Benoit Balmana, managing director Americas, Nanoledge. “We can improve toughness, compression resistance, fatigue, impact resistance and flexural strength resistance without decreasing other performance features of the composite .”

“Strategic collaborations such as this enable innovations that leapfrog customers over their competition,” said Joe Ventura, business development manager, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. “Furthermore, end-users can bring their products to market with the peace-of-mind that they have a reliable source for multi-walled carbon nanotubes at an optimum price/performance ratio.” Ventura cited the collaboration with Velozzi, a new OEM, and Nanoledge as an example. The collaboration will support Velozzi’s goal to develop a crossover vehicle, the SOLO, capable of achieving 100 miles per gallon. The carmaker is also designing a high-performance sports model, the Velozzi Supercar.

Nanoledge’s Participation in Research Network ArboraNano

2/23/2009 by Kai SCHIERHOLZ

The Canadian Forest NanoProducts Network selected as a new Business-led Network of Centers of Excellence BL-NCE funded by the Government of Canada.

MONTREAL, Feb. 23. / 09 - The Minister of Development Economic, Innovation and Export Trade and Minister responsible for Montreal region, Raymond Bachand, welcomed the announcement by the Minister Federal State (Science and Technology), the Honorable Garry Goodyear ArboraNano and recognizing the Consortium Québécois sur la Découverte de la Medicine (CQDM) as part of the Networks of Centers of Excellence initiated by the Government of Canada.

ArboraNano's mission is to build a new bio-based  on innovation, nanotechnology products created from our wood resources. ArboraNano is the result of a partnership between FP Innovations, NanoQuebec, and the National Institute for Nanothechnologies (NINT) and Nanotech BC. The Ministry of Economic Development, Innovation and Export (MDEIE) to help finance and support NanoQuebec in its efforts to develop a competitiveness cluster in Quebec areas related to nanotechnology, at a height of $ 11 million over 3 years. FP Innovations, the largest forestry research institute, non - profit world, is a research consortium pre-accredited MDEIE.

The Consortium Québécois sur la Découverte du Médicament (CQDM), launched last  June at the BIO 2008 is the result of an initiative of Fonds de la Recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ) and the MDEIE who jointly funded to the tune of $ 4 million setting up the consortium. Pfizer Canada, AstraZeneca Canada and Merck Frosst Canada have invested respectively 1 Million annually for the first 5 years. This consortium, a first in Canada, contributes to enhance the competitiveness of Quebec in a context dominated by international competition. By bringing together eminent
scientists from industry, academia, hospitals and Government, CQDM Synergy between research academic and industrial research.

"Designating them as centers of excellence, the federal government announced investments of $ 8 million for ArboraNano and $ 8.9 million over four years for CQDM to support them to continue their activities search. The alliance between business and private centers research is at the heart of our Quebec strategy for research and innovation, "said Bachand

NANOLEDGE inc, leading nanochemicals company, specialized in the integration of nanoparticules into polymer systems, will actively affect research and development issues related to NCC, the most important Canadian nanomaterial.

"The role of NANOLEDGE in the network is to identify those research challenges involved in the integration of NCC in advanced polymer composites made from resins in order to obtain eco-friendly materials", said Kai SCHIERHOLZ, Chief Scientist Officer, Nanoledge inc.

NANOLEDGE will be instrumental in guiding R&D required to functionalize NCC or process NCC in order to integrate NCC with other materials. NANOLEDGE is also involved in directing the R&D aimed at characterizing the physical and electrical properties of these composites in order to identify promising applications.

One of the most important goal for NANOLEDGE is the orientation towards “Environmentally-friendly” products. One is the use of (nano) fillers based on renewable resources. Polymers reinforced with NCC will lead to a new generation of composites with high strength-to-weight ratios that are of high interest to the aerospace and automotive sectors.

NANOLEDGE will also participate in a variety of workshops designed to meet the other network participants and identify the research challenges/development opportunities for the 4 year duration of the network. This will create linkages and networks between university, forest sector members, allied industries and NANOLEDGE inc.

"By working together with businesses, institutions education sector and research groups in different sectors, we have infused a unique synergy that positions the Quebec as an important center for research and development in North America, " a Minister Bachand concluded.
